It is interesting and sobering to note that there is a break in the list of sports and activities for the World War II years from 1939-‐1945.
Today, Commencement ceremonies typically are between 1.5 and 2 hours in duration. The Commencement Exercises in November 1954 lasted 4 hours!
The first Central teams to be named the Trojans and the Colts were the 1956 Junior and Senior Football teams respectively. These names were chosen as a result of a contest that was held to name to the two football teams.
In the fall of 1959, four senior male students were suspended for growing beards. This development was covered by the Toronto papers and articles included interviews and pictures of the students.
Until September 1963 male and female students had been obliged to enter the school by separate entrances. That fall permission was granted for students to enter the school by any door except the main front door that was reserved for visitors.
It is almost mind-‐boggling to contemplate the variety of music that has been played over nine decades at Central dances and proms. In 1964, a yearbook article described school “dances as re-‐enacting ancient tribal dances”.
Burlington Central has celebrated two highly successful anniversaries. For the Golden Anniversary Central hosted a week-‐long birthday bash in May 1972. The 75th Anniversary Reunion took place in May 1997. The four-‐day event included decade parties held at various locations and a huge Friday evening event at the school (mainly on the football field) that attracted between four and five thousand alumni and former staff.
